In Addition to Event Victory, Increase in Donors This Week a Win for Local Patients
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Just nine donations ahead starting the day, Kentucky fans closed Big Blue Slam in emphatic fashion Friday for what was ultimately a convincing victory and a win for local hospitals and patients.
Locked in a back-and-forth battle all week, Kentucky Blood Center donors turned in their best showing of the 2025 competition (318 donations Friday) to beat LifeSouth Community Blood Center, 1,343 donations to 1,250. It’s the fifth straight victory and 11th overall for Kentucky in the 17th annual event to boost the winter blood supply.
Most importantly, the five-day turnout by Kentucky donors provided relief for a waning blood supply that had suffered from recent winter-weather cancellations, an uptick in transfusions and low donor turnout.
“We are so thrilled to win this competition, but we are ecstatic to have boosted blood types that were in critical and low levels,” said Mandy Brajuha, VP of external relations at KBC. “Thank you to everyone who came out this week. Whether you were motivated to beat our rivals or just wanted to help, you helped save local lives at a time of need.”
Donations at KBC supply more than 70 hospitals in Kentucky, including UK HealthCare, Baptist Health, CHI Saint Joseph, Appalachian Regional Healthcare and more.
