Kentucky Blood Center relies solely on volunteer blood donors to supply more than 70 hospitals throughout the Commonwealth. The current demand for blood is 400 units a day. In order to meet this demand, Kentucky Blood Center works with community leaders to establish blood drives in schools, churches, and places of business in the area on a regular basis. We have eight permanent blood donation locations established in Lexington, Louisville, Corbin, Frankfort, Pikeville and Somerset. We also have mobile blood collection teams that travel throughout the Commonwealth daily.
Once you’ve scheduled your donation and arrived, you will be asked a short series of screening questions to establish whether you qualify to give. Once this is completed, you will then be able to participate in saving someone’s life by giving blood—a process that takes only about 12 minutes.
There is no faster or easier way to know that you have participated in our community and directly saved a life than giving blood.
If you are in good health, weigh at least 110 pounds, have a photo I.D. and are at least 17 years old, you could be a blood donor. If you’re 16 years old, you can donate with a signed parent permission slip.
If you have questions about whether you can donate because of your health history, foreign travel and/or medications, check out of Blood Donation FAQ page or call 859.276.2534 or toll free 800.775.2522 and ask to speak to a Donor Room Team Leader. On the day of your donation, you can answer your required health history questions before coming to the donation location using QuickPass.
No amount of money can replace a simple blood donation. Blood cannot be created in a laboratory, and only donors like you can provide blood to patients who need it right now.
