KBC Encourages Eligible Individuals to Make Donation on World Blood Donor Day

A blood transfusion is needed every two seconds in the United States

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Ahead of World Blood Donor Day on Tuesday, Kentucky Blood Center is thanking local blood donors and urging all eligible individuals to save lives through donation. Those interested in donating can find more information about the process and make an appointment at kybloodcenter.org or by calling 800.775.2522.

“World Blood Donor Day is an opportunity to thank our many local donors who selflessly help save lives and encourage more people to start their own donation journey,” said Mandy Brajuha, VP of external relations at KBC. “This is a critical time for our blood supply. The need for blood products continues, but the pace of donations traditionally slows during the summer months. World Blood Donor Day is the perfect opportunity to make an appointment to donate blood.”

Countries around the globe celebrate World Blood Donor Day annually to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products and to thank blood donors. Mexico is the sponsor country this year, and the theme is “Donating blood is an act of solidarity. Join the effort and save lives.” Resources and additional information are available here.

America’s Blood Centers recently released a first-of-its-kind guide that provides the latest look at America’s blood supply. It found that although a blood transfusion is needed every two seconds in the United States, just 3% of the U.S. population donates blood each year. Worldwide, more than 120 million units of blood are needed each year.

Celebrating nearly 55 years of saving lives in Kentucky, KBC is the largest independent, full-service, nonprofit blood center in Kentucky. Licensed by the FDA, KBC’s sole purpose is to collect, process and distribute blood for patients in Kentucky. KBC provides services in 90 Kentucky counties and has donor centers in Lexington, Louisville, Pikeville, Somerset and the Corbin area.

Donor centers are open Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. In combination with Kentucky Blood Center’s nearly 2,000 mobile drives a year, KBC supplies more than 70 medical facilities in the state.

KBC is currently offering exciting promotional items this summer, headlined by the 2022 Summer Getaway Giveaway. All donors 18 and older who register now through Sept. 10 will have the chance to win a 2022 Toyota RAV4. Donors who get out early this summer and register now through July 4 at a KBC mobile blood drive or donor center will also be entered to win a five-night, six-day vacation package for two to the Excellence Oyster Bay in Montego Bay, Jamaica. The winner of the vacation package will be announced after July 4.

Each donation for the Summer Getaway Giveaway counts as an entry, meaning donors will have a higher chance to win one of the two summer prize packages the more they donate. Donors can give whole blood once every 56 days.

Blood donors must be at least 17 years old (16 with parental consent), weigh at least 110 pounds, be in general good health, show a photo I.D. and meet additional requirements. Sixteen-year-old donors must have a signed parental permission slip, which can be found at kybloodcenter.org.

Corbin location will provide convenient location for Tri-County donors

CORBIN, Ky. – Answering the call to provide convenience and easier access to donors eager to save lives, Kentucky Blood Center is opening two donor center locations this summer, starting Monday in the Tri-County area (Corbin). Another donor center will also open in Frankfort in early July.

The Tri-County Donor Center is located at 1454 W. Cumberland Gap Pkwy., in the Union Plaza next to Transamerica and Kentucky Farm Bureau Insurance.

Donors can make appointments online now for the Tri-County location at kybloodcenter.org or by calling 800.775.2522. Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments are preferred.

In addition to KBC’s two donor centers in Lexington (Beaumont and Andover), two in Louisville (Middletown and Hillview), Somerset and Pikeville, the new locations in Corbin and Frankfort will bring KBC to eight brick-and-mortar centers open to donors Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. by mid-summer.

In combination with Kentucky Blood Center’s nearly 2,000 mobile drives a year, KBC will be better equipped than ever to serve more than 70 medical facilities in the state and provide services for more than 90 Kentucky counties from Pikeville to Paducah. KBC is the largest independent, full-service, nonprofit blood center in Kentucky.

“We are excited to open new donor centers this summer to ensure a healthy blood supply for our local hospitals,” said Bill Reed, CEO of Kentucky Blood Center. “In an ever-changing world, we are not immune to adjustments. After two years of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have seen our donation percentages shift from a 70-30 mobile-center split to more of a 50-50 draw. There are several reasons for the change, but the important thing is that we meet the needs of our donors.”

The openings come at an important time. KBC and blood centers across the nation have been operating with a low supply throughout the pandemic, which is especially worrisome heading into a traditionally slow donation period on the calendar. Summer typically leads to a drop in donors when schools aren’t in session and many families are traveling.

KBC is also offering exciting promotional items this summer, headlined by the 2022 Summer Getaway Giveaway.

Blood donations help KBC supply blood for cancer treatments, premature births, car accidents, diseases, surgeries and more. One donation can save up to three lives, and one in four people will need a transfusion at some point in their life.

Blood donors must be at least 17 years old (16 with parental consent), weigh at least 110 pounds, be in general good health, show a photo I.D. and meet additional requirements. Sixteen-year-old donors must have a signed parental permission slip, which can be found at kybloodcenter.org.

KBC Announces ‘Summer Getaway Giveaway’ Prizes

Donors can win an all-inclusive vacation Jamaican vacation or a Toyota RAV4

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Battling a continuing low blood supply that has plagued blood centers across the nation, Kentucky Blood Center is providing donors more reason than ever to donate this summer with the unveiling of its “Summer Getaway Giveaway” promotion.

Donors who give blood this summer with Kentucky Blood Center will be eligible to win a 2022 Toyota RAV4 and an all-inclusive Jamaican vacation. KBC will once again offer its summer vehicle giveaway this year, giving all donors 18 and older who register between May 23 and Sept. 10 the chance to win a 2022 Toyota RAV4. Donors who get out early this summer and register between May 23 through July 4 at a KBC mobile blood drive or donor center will also be entered to win a five-night, six-day vacation package for two to the Excellence Oyster Bay in Montego Bay, Jamaica. The winner of the vacation package will be announced after July 4.

Summer traditionally leads to a drop in donations since schools aren’t in session and many families are traveling. Coupled with a continuing high demand for blood that has outpaced donations since the COVID-19 pandemic, KBC is calling on new and loyal donors to help dig out of a two-year urgent hole.

“Even as we start to return to a pre-pandemic life and go back to many of our normal routines, unfortunately blood donation participation numbers have remained low,” said Mandy Brajuha, vice president of external relations. “Through the first quarter of 2022, we are only reaching about 75% of the 400 donors needed daily to supply our more than 70 hospitals in Kentucky. Local hospitals and the patients they serve rely on KBC and our donor centers year-round. We hope these additional and exciting giveaway opportunities will motivate donors to make lifesaving donations this summer.”

The winner of the all-inclusive Jamaica getaway will have 12 months to redeem the vacation after the package has been awarded (subject to blackout dates). The Excellence Oyster Bay, a Victorian-style paradise, is located on a private peninsula in Montego Bay and is surrounded by stunning turquoise waters and mangrove lagoons. A family-friendly option is also available at an alternate resort for the prize winner.

The Toyota RAV4 features a blizzard pearl white exterior with a Nutmeg SofTex interior. The 2.5-liter, four-cylinder, front-wheel drive car is equipped with a limited-grade advanced technology package, a limited-grade weather package and a panoramic glass roof.

KBC will offer additional thank you items throughout the summer, including a limited-edition trucker hat that (available now through June), movie tickets (June 27 through July 5 at donor centers only) and a “Giving is Good” T-shirt (July and August in all locations).

KBC, the largest independent, full-service, nonprofit blood center in Kentucky, services more than 90 Kentucky counties from Pikeville to Paducah.

Blood donations help KBC supply blood for cancer treatments, premature births, car accidents, diseases, surgeries and more.
