KBC Announces ‘Summer Getaway Giveaway’ Prizes

Donors can win an all-inclusive vacation Jamaican vacation or a Toyota RAV4

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Battling a continuing low blood supply that has plagued blood centers across the nation, Kentucky Blood Center is providing donors more reason than ever to donate this summer with the unveiling of its “Summer Getaway Giveaway” promotion.

Donors who give blood this summer with Kentucky Blood Center will be eligible to win a 2022 Toyota RAV4 and an all-inclusive Jamaican vacation. KBC will once again offer its summer vehicle giveaway this year, giving all donors 18 and older who register between May 23 and Sept. 10 the chance to win a 2022 Toyota RAV4. Donors who get out early this summer and register between May 23 through July 4 at a KBC mobile blood drive or donor center will also be entered to win a five-night, six-day vacation package for two to the Excellence Oyster Bay in Montego Bay, Jamaica. The winner of the vacation package will be announced after July 4.

Summer traditionally leads to a drop in donations since schools aren’t in session and many families are traveling. Coupled with a continuing high demand for blood that has outpaced donations since the COVID-19 pandemic, KBC is calling on new and loyal donors to help dig out of a two-year urgent hole.

“Even as we start to return to a pre-pandemic life and go back to many of our normal routines, unfortunately blood donation participation numbers have remained low,” said Mandy Brajuha, vice president of external relations. “Through the first quarter of 2022, we are only reaching about 75% of the 400 donors needed daily to supply our more than 70 hospitals in Kentucky. Local hospitals and the patients they serve rely on KBC and our donor centers year-round. We hope these additional and exciting giveaway opportunities will motivate donors to make lifesaving donations this summer.”

The winner of the all-inclusive Jamaica getaway will have 12 months to redeem the vacation after the package has been awarded (subject to blackout dates). The Excellence Oyster Bay, a Victorian-style paradise, is located on a private peninsula in Montego Bay and is surrounded by stunning turquoise waters and mangrove lagoons. A family-friendly option is also available at an alternate resort for the prize winner.

The Toyota RAV4 features a blizzard pearl white exterior with a Nutmeg SofTex interior. The 2.5-liter, four-cylinder, front-wheel drive car is equipped with a limited-grade advanced technology package, a limited-grade weather package and a panoramic glass roof.

KBC will offer additional thank you items throughout the summer, including a limited-edition trucker hat that (available now through June), movie tickets (June 27 through July 5 at donor centers only) and a “Giving is Good” T-shirt (July and August in all locations).

KBC, the largest independent, full-service, nonprofit blood center in Kentucky, services more than 90 Kentucky counties from Pikeville to Paducah.

Blood donations help KBC supply blood for cancer treatments, premature births, car accidents, diseases, surgeries and more.

Blood donors must be at least 17 years old (16 with parental consent), weigh at least 110 pounds, be in general good health, show a photo I.D. and meet additional requirements. Sixteen-year-old donors must have a signed parental permission slip, which can be found at kybloodcenter.org.

Appointments are preferred and walk-ins are welcome. To schedule a donation, visit kybloodcenter.org or call 800.775.2522.

Kentucky Blood Center, The Milk Bank Expand Partnership

Somerset and Pikeville donor centers to begin accepting donations May 2

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Kentucky Blood Center is expanding its partnership with The Milk Bank to include two additional drop-off locations for frozen breast milk.

Starting Monday, May 2, KBC’s Somerset and Pikeville donor centers will accept donations of frozen breast milk from approved donors. KBC – the largest independent, full-service, nonprofit blood center in Kentucky – opened four milk depots in October at its two Lexington (Beaumont, Andover) and Louisville (Middletown, Hillview) donor centers.

Donated milk is transported to The Milk Bank – a nonprofit improving health outcomes for premature and ill infants – to be pasteurized and distributed to NICUs and outpatient families, primarily in Indiana, Kentucky and Missouri. Ideal candidates for milk donors are non-smoking women in good general health. To get pre-screened or ask questions on eligibility, contact The Milk Bank at (317) 536-1670 or visit themilkbank.org/donate-milk.

“Kentucky Blood Center is excited to work with The Milk Bank to expand this important operation in Central and Eastern Kentucky,” said Bill Reed, KBC president and CEO. “We have seen an incredible number register to donate to this important program in the first seven months of the partnership, and it made sense to make this opportunity available at all of our current donor centers.”

The number of approved milk donors in Kentucky has doubled since KBC opened its initial four drop-off locations in October.

“The partnership between Kentucky Blood Center and The Milk Bank is saving infant lives,” said Freedom Kolb, executive director of The Milk Bank. “We are grateful for this expansion that will allow infants born too small, too sick or too soon to have their best chance at celebrating a first birthday. We are inspired by all the amazing milk donors accessing these drop-off sites to provide the gift of health and life.”

Approved milk donors can deliver frozen breast milk during normal operating hours at KBC’s six donor centers, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
