Kentucky Blood Center Implements FDA Guidance for Assessing Blood Donor Eligibility Dec. 11, 2023

Component 4 2

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Kentucky Blood Center has implemented the new donor screening process based on guidance on donor eligibility issued by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in May 2023. The guidance established a blood donor screening process based on Individual Donor Assessment, not sexual or gender identity.  All U.S. blood centers are regulated by the FDA and must adhere to their donor eligibility policies.

In preparation for the change, KBC has implemented changes to the donor history questionnaire, updated and validated computer systems regulated by the FDA, conducted staff training and updated operational procedures.

The new guidance continues to make the safety of the blood supply a priority while treating all donors with respect. It is based on data showing that the best protection against viruses like HIV is strong testing of blood donations and a uniform screening process for donors.
